Biography:
José L.S. Gámez is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, a member of the Latin American Studies faculty, and the Coordinator of the Design + Society Research Center. He has been a Research Fellow with the Institute for Social Capital and a Faculty Fellow with the Urban Institute at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His research and design practices explore questions of cultural identity in architecture and urban design, the impacts of Latino immigration upon urban space, and critical practices in Chicano Art. His research is published in Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies and Places: A Forum of Environmental Design. He has also authored essays that appear in the edited books Writing Urbanism: A Design Reader, Expanding Architecture: Design As Activism, and Global Charlotte Museums and his contributions to the work of assemblage STUDIO (Las Vegas) have been featured in New Museums and Architecture and the Miniature. He has taught at Portland State University and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas prior to joining the faculty at UNC Charlotte. He received his Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M, his Master of Architecture from UC Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of California at Los Angeles.
